He leaned in and kissed her even though there was a chance that they would be discovered at any moment. Carmen found herself not caring as she melted under his touch. His hand reached up and squeezed her breasts through the fabric of her clothes, his brazen touch nearly undoing her.

“Let’s go somewhere more private,” he said. He took her by the elbow and started leading her towards the garden but froze a few moments later. Carmen looked up to see Ramon and two other servants walking towards them. Carmen and Arthur exchanged a glance. His lips were swollen, and her hair and dress were in utter disarray. Any fool would understand what they had been up to only moments prior. They needed to get out of there before it was too late. Arthur took Carmen’s hand in his and squeezed slightly. In haste, they hurried towards the opposite side where more servants were waiting for them.

Arthur swore under his breath and then turned on his heels and headed the other way. Carmen’s eyes widened when she realized where he was taking her. “Isn’t this the way to your chambers?”

“Yes,” he said sheepishly. Before she could ask any more questions, two more servants appeared carrying trays and Carmen had no choice but to follow him inside. Her heart was beating fast as they leaned against the door together. They had almost been caught together today.

“That was a too close for comfort,” she said as she sank against the door.

“Indeed,” Arthur said. “That wasn’t my intention when I kissed you, but you were looking irresistible, standing there waiting for me.”

Carmen’s eyes widened. “You knew?”

“Of course, I did,” Arthur said with a small smile. Carmen’s head turned to examine the room, her eyes zeroing on the bed. The imprint of the memory of him pressing her into his bed was fresh in her mind. And Arthur seemed to have the same thought as he too stared at the bed.

“I-I,” he stammered and then cleared his voice.

The tension between them was thick enough to be cut through with a knife. “You had the piano sent to me.”

Arthur nodded.

Carmen frowned. “But why?”

“Because you told me you wanted to perform on the piano, and you didn’t have one. I was trying to be of some kind of help.”

“You’ve already returned the music hall to meandrefused to take rent for it,” Carmen said. “I already owe you too much.”

Arthur shook his head. “You don’t owe me anything.” But then his eyes dropped to her lips. “Except for a kiss.”

“Kiss me,” Carmen breathed, and she knew that with those two simple words, she had given him permission for more.
