“She called herself Lily, my lord.”

* * *

Carmen was frantically tearing through all the rooms in hopes that she would find Remi somewhere around here or at least a clue to where she had gone. Why would Jaxon leave without her? Unless… A horrible thought occurred to her. Remi had heard her when she was telling Lily that Nora was her daughter.

As she crossed the long corridor that led to the music hall, she heard muffled noises coming from the other side of the door. Curious, she drew near and pressed her ears at the door. The workers had left after the last of the construction was done. Nobody was supposed to be inside.

She unbolted the door and then gasped at what she found inside. Remi lay bound and gagged, the side of her forehead split open in a small wound. Carmen sat on her knees next to her and pulled out the gag from her mouth. “What happened to you?”

Remi gasped for breath as she tried. “It was Lily.”

Shock rippled through her. “Lily did this?” Lily was the one working with Jaxon, not Remi as she had initially thought. Bile rose up her throat at the thought of her oldest friend betraying her in this manner.

“She was speaking t-to that strange man and they were discussing about killing a child. I overheard them and immediately confronted them, but they hit me and locked me here. I have been trying to get out of here for hours.”

Carmen immediately untied Remi. “I’m sorry,” she said.

“I never trusted Lily. She would pretend to be your friend in front of you while she told the other women all sorts of lies about you. She said you were sleeping with the Duke and wanted to sell this place. That’s why they had begun to distrust you.”

She had distrusted Remi meanwhile Lily was the one behind everything. She hadn’t been paranoid after all. How long since she and Jaxon were planning this? But she didn’t have time to think, it was the time to act.

“Do you know where they are going?”

“She said something about a park,” Remi said. She could only mean the Hyde Park. Lily must have remembered when she had told her that it was one of Nora’s favorite places to visit.

“Nora,” Carmen muttered softly under her breath. “My daughter’s life is in danger. I must leave immediately.”

Remi’s eyes widened. “Your daughter?”

Carmen nodded. “I’ll explain everything to you later. But for now, I must hurry.” She began to saunter away when Remi called to her from behind. “Wait,” Remi said. “Don’t go alone. I know where you might get help.”
