She stepped back. “Of course.”

He entered the room and she closed the door behind her before crossing to sit on her bed. Bertram came and stood over her. “Well? Did you speak with your commander?”

She took a deep breath, looking down, before nodding. “I did.”

“And?”

“He would not tell me much, seemed to regard me as a traitor. But one thing he seemed to imply is that the plot to kill you is very much supported by the French.”

“That makes sense.”

Letty quirked an eyebrow. “How so?”

“Well, apparently the shorter man who you overheard plotting my demise has some ties to French aristocracy.”

Letty gawped at him. “Is that so?”

“Yes.”

“They seem to think that it is too late to stop this ‘Third Man’ from carrying out whatever thing he was going to do and so the next best thing, they think, is to kill you.”

“Your commander said so?”

“Yes!”

Bertram turned away, biting his bottom lip thoughtfully. “Well…that is interesting, indeed.”

“Is it? Because I think that you should just tell me where they can find this Third Man and then they will call off your assassins.”

Bertram shook his head. “I cannot do that.”

“Why not?” Letty looked like she wanted to stamp her foot in frustration.

“Because there is no way to reach him now. Deliberately so.”

“Who is this man and what is he doing?”

Bertram hesitated for a moment. He did trust Letty but this sort of intelligence was limited to a very few men. It would be foolish to tell her when all it would do was tempt her to take the information to the French in a misguided attempt to save his life.

“I cannot tell you.”

She let out a huff of frustration. “Well then, what now?”

Despite his trust in her, it was a relief to Bertram that she did not attempt to push him on the Third Man. “Now we have names for our villains, we try to weave them into net with which we can trap them all.”

“And if you do not?”

Bertram shrugged. “It is no longer my decision as to what happens next. That is up to Wellington and possibly even higher authorities.”

She got to her feet, coming to stand by his side and wrap a hand around his wrist. “That is all very well and good but what areweto do?”

He turned to her with a smile. “Well, if you still wish to marry me, then we should obtain a license. Given that I am on active duty I do believe I can get one expedited. We could have the wedding as soon as next weekend.”

Letty smiled. “Do you really want to marry me so fast?”

He turned his wrist around so that he could grasp her fingers with his before looking into her eyes. “Every day that I have to wait is an agony.”

She leaned close whispering in his ear. “You exaggerate.”
