“Forgive me,” Bertram jumped in, “she did communicate that the commander was here and what he came for. She told me all about it.”

Wellington turned to him, looking less than amused. “Is that so? Why am I only just hearing of this?”

“Because we were only able to speak as we were retiring for the evening. I fully intended to apprise you of this development this morning.”

Wellington frowned. “If we had known last night, we would have followed him, too.”

“Thechevalieris always most alert to his surroundings. It would have been difficult to follow him without his knowledge in any case.”

Bertram appreciated that Letty was trying to help but he knew her words would only further inflame the Duke.

“It was my oversight. I should have realized.” Bertram said quickly, “But did you find anything out about the meeting they held?”

“Yes, we did. The reason that they have not killed you outright is because they mean to capture you and torture you for information.”
