She blinked in disbelief as she watched him wipe his gloved hands against a cloth and roll up the cloth and put it away in his pocket. He slipped out of the tent, looking left and right as to check on whether anyone was about. As soon as he disappeared, she climbed out of bed and stumbled to the table. He’d returned the razor to its leather satchel as well as the strop.

She bent down sniffing cautiously.

What could it have been?

A rustling at the doorway made her whirl around so fast she would have landed on her buttocks if strong hands had not taken hold of her and righted her.

“Careful. Why are you on your feet?”

“I-I…” she clung to him feeling a little dizzy. “I…your…danger.”

He frowned, leading her slowly back to the bed. “What do you mean?”

She exhaled and inhaled a few times, arranging the words in her mind before letting them out. “There was a man. He came in. He poured something on your razor and strop.”

Bertram frowned. “He did that in front of you?”

“He thought I was asleep. But I heard him and woke up. I think…I think it’s poison.”

Bertram’s brow furrowed and he looked back at the table. “Are you sure? Perhaps it was my batman you saw, my valet?”

She shook her head vigorously. “N-no. Please. You have to believe me.”

“Hush, relax. Do not become agitated. I believe you.”

“Y-you do?”

“Yes. Now lay down and let me cover you.” He pushed her gently down on the bed and arranged her gown decorously around her before tucking her in. She felt quite cherished and looked after and not at all like a prisoner.

“Thank you,” she murmured and put her head on the pillow. He nodded, smiled slightly and then went back to the table where he reached for his satchel.

Letty sat up quickly. “No! Don’t touch it!”

He whirled around, eyes wide with surprise. “Excuse me?”

“He wore gloves! He put it in your shaving things. It’s probably dangerous upon contact with skin!”

He frowned again, eyes narrowed as he squinted at her. “It is quite disconcerting how much you know about all this. Have you ever poisoned someone?”

She glared at him. “No, I’m not an executioner.”

He grunted, nodding as he turned back to the shaving kit. “I’ll have an expert examine these.”

Letty lay back down. “Good,” she whispered and closed her eyes.
