“Well, once I realized that he was trying to kill you, I did my best to stop him.”

“You saved my life.”

She waved a hand. “Ce n'est rien.”

“Oh, it isn’t nothing. I am…grateful.”

She looked away as her face grew hot. She could not remember ever having been thanked by any of her superiors. Not even by her father.

“What will you do to him now?”

“I will obtain some answers from him.”

“I could perhaps, help you with that.” She looked at him slowly from beneath her lashes.

“Are you schooled in the art of interrogation?”

She gave a Gallic shrug. “Iama spy.”

He huffed in amusement. “Indeed you are.” He cocked his head to the side with a grin, “I do not know why I continue to forget that.”

She gestured at her face. “I do not look like one. It is what makes me so good.”

He blinked at her, nodding slowly. “You’re right.” He straightened up, inhaling deeply, “But spy or not, I owe you a debt. So what boon would you ask of me?”

It was her turn to blink at him in surprise. “Boon?”

He nodded slowly. “Anything you desire.”

Her heart jumped a bit at those words.

What do I want?

Her eyes fluttered as the answer occurred to her.

To stay here?

To have a real family?

To have the Duke love me?

She knew these were impossible things. At best, the Duke might laugh, or offer to make her his mistress. She had not forgotten that he had kissed Lady Perrin in the orchard.

And then kissed me right after, the cad.

“I am content, Your Grace. There is nothing I desire.”

“Now, now, Miss Strange, you and I both know that is not true.”

She frowned, wondering if he knew her thoughts. She searched his impassive face for any clue of what he could mean but he gave nothing away.

“What do you mean?”

“All of us desiresomething.”

“You’re right. I… misspoke. What I meant to say is that what I want, you cannot give me.”

His brows almost disappeared in his hair. “And why is that, pray tell.”
