She quirked an eyebrow. “And how would you know that?”

“You’re the Duke of Thybaut’s baker what came the other day. I heard my sister raging about you.”

Letty’s heart stopped beating for a moment before restarting at an accelerated pace. “You’re right. I lied to you. Forgive me?”

The man nodded.

“Well, if you can’t tell me your name, whatcanyou tell me?”

“The men what you’re looking for are not here.”

“W-what men do you mean?”

“The ones what sent that man to kill the Duke.”

Letty blinked a few times, surprised at his bluntness and his knowledge. “Why? Where are they?”

“They left.”

“Where did they go?”

“I don’t know.”

Letty was stymied for a minute. She bit her lip, thinking hard. “Well, who would know where they went?”

“Sister would know.”

“Sister…?”

“Yes.”

“Do they work for your sister, these men?”

“No.”

Letty was stymied. How to get this man to tell her something she could use?

“Er, what are their names?”

“Small and Tall.”

That sounds like the prisoner’s description of the men he met.

“Do they have other names?” she asked desperately.

“I don’t know.”

She tried to think of another way to frame her questions that might give her a clue as to who these men were. Clearly this man knew them.

“You should leave now,” he said before she could formulate anything.

“Why?”

“If sister finds you here she won’t be pleased.”

“But you won’t tell her, will you?”

The man simply stared.
