“I’m sorry that my peers are so ill-mannered,” he murmured in her ear.

She giggled. “Yes, they are. Who would have thought?”

“I certainly did. Why do you think I avoid them so?”

“What happened to honor and gentlemanliness and all that?”

“Ah, it’s beautiful propaganda is what it is.”

She buried her face in his shoulder to hide her laughter, the initial heaviness she’d been carrying disappearing with his words. She’d thought it was her fault that these men showed no boundaries, but Bertram’s words let her know that it wasn’t.

“I suppose if I had Lady in front of my name they would remember their manners.”

“Alas, it is quite true.” Bertram peered down at her, his smile dry, “The good news is that after today, we never have to see them again.”

Letty opened her mouth to answer and then let it hang open as she saw who had just entered the room.

“Letty?”

She could hear Bertram call her but the sound seemed to come from very far away.

“Letty?”

She jerked, her eyes cutting to Bertram, even though they remained wide and shocked. “What is it? What’s the matter?” his own eyes were dark with concern.

“M-my commander.”

“What about your commander, Letty?”

“H-he’s here. He just walked into the ballroom.”
