Abruptly, Lord Reginald straightened. His eyes burned into her with such hunger that Marcella shivered. He should’ve leaned forward, kissed her, and left all thoughts of Jane and the world behind them. “I was only looking at you. I was trying to find your contradictions, but whatever they are, they’re clearly not going to be found on the surface.”

“You were hoping to see them in my face?” she asked.

Lord Reginald nodded. “They say that the devil was an angel once, after all. An exceptionally beautiful one, in fact.”

Marcella did feel a bit wicked at the moment, for thinking so ardently of a lord whom she scarcely knew. “Are you calling me the devil, My Lord? I don’t find that descriptor very pleasant.”

“Not at all,” he replied. “I have the sense that there’s something more to you, though. Something beyond what my eye can see.”

Has he found me out?

“That’s all women,” Marcella replied. “You’d do well to remember that, My Lord.”

He nodded, accepting the answer without further comment. Lord Reginald hadn’t found her out, then. He may have sensed that she was putting on a performance for him, just as he was for her. Or, he was only trying to flatter her. It was becoming difficult to think, for her thoughts kept returning to how close he’d been. She could’ve leaned forward and kissed him.

It’s not something which deserves dwelling on.

But the thought of that near-kiss haunted her.
