“I didn’t want to bring a woman into my life. I worked a very dangerous trade.”

Lady Marcella let her hand fall to her side. “It’s getting late, My Lord. We should return before nightfall.”

Without waiting for Reginald’s response, Lady Marcella set her course towards the waiting horses. He followed and once they reached the horses, offered his hand to help her mount. As her hand touched his, warmth spread through his palm. The simple touch had set him aflame, and he only reluctantly released her hand as she mounted her horse, adjusting her skirts around her with practiced ease.

“I would be a good husband,” Reginald said. “I promise I’ll respect you. I’ll please you.”

Her eyes were bright and her cheeks flushed.

“I know you would be,” she said. “I think I do, anyway. I’m usually a good judge of character. I am, if nothing else, quite sure you’d please me.”

Maybe she wasn’t quite as sheltered and innocent as he’d assumed.

“I can tell you’re an excellent judge,” Reginald replied, “based upon the friends you keep. Lady Adeline seems like a very reasonable lady.”

“Too reasonable, sometimes,” Lady Marcella replied. “You must never speak to her.”

Reginald arched an eyebrow, and Lady Marcella graced him with a shy, genuine smile. “She knows all my flaws far better than anyone else.”

“Noted,” Reginald replied.

He wondered if Lady Adeline might also know the secret to Lady Marcella’s strange behavior as well as how he might persuade the young lady to trust him.
