“I am happy that you want children,” she told him, caressing his arm as she laid side by side with him. “Even if nothing had changed, I would have liked you to have realized you deserved to have your own family, regardless of the man you thought was your father.”
“You may be right,” he agreed. “But can you imagine trying to convince me?”
“No,” she laughed suddenly. “You are a man of your word. I imagine all logic aside, you had made your vow, and would stick to it.”
“Exactly right.”
A knock at their door distracted them for a moment. The two of them scrambled underneath the sheets and Michael called out, “Come in!”
A maid brought in a supper tray, setting it on a table just inside the door before quickly retreating and shutting the door behind her. Once she had gone, Michael retrieved the tray and brought it to the bed.
“I would be quite content to do this every day for a month,” Michael said as they uncovered the plates. “Just spend the time for us to get to know each other.”
“Will Marigold be quiet normally?” Lydia asked. “With Joseph and Kitty gone, that would just leave Lionel and Ranora around.”
“I think we would find ourselves alone often,” he said, in between bites. “Marigold is very quiet, a very easy place to live. Though, I would be happy to have your family visit, even stay for a while. Your mother, sisters, and Lord help him, even Francis.”
Lydia laughed, smiling up at Michael. “I am looking forward to us spending the rest of our days together.”
“I am too,” he said, placing a kiss on her mouth.
Laying there in bed with him, finishing their tray of dinner, Lydia felt relieved and happy for the first time in years. Even though she had no idea what the future might hold, she knew that whatever happened, she and Michael would be able to figure it out together.
For the small amount of time that they had known each other, they had been able to preserve through so much adversity. She knew that no matter what else came their way, they would be able to face it together.
