“Let us make our way to the parlor for music and games,” he said.

Lydia took his hand and followed, wrapping her hand around his arm.

“That’s the second conversation that you have saved me from today,” she whispered to him, once they were in the hall. “Your cousin and his fiancée have taken a great interest in me today.”

“Perhaps, they have noticed our long hours away alone together,” Michael mused, leaning toward her as they walked. “It should be good for us all to spend some time together indoors, unless the weather decides to clear before the end of the day.”

Hesitant to ask, Lydia felt her pulse quicken as she asked Michael, “Do they know our engagement is a lie?”

She looked up to see his reaction and almost swore that Michael blushed. “Unfortunately, they do. You see, I was quite upset when I first heard the news.”

“That might explain Kitty’s initial dislike of me.”

“It may,” he agreed. “Though, I would like to think that we shall remain friends even after the end of the Season, all of us.”

A cold feeling ran through her body at the thought that they would not speak again. She nodded quickly, “Yes, I would hope we would, indeed, remain friends. I’m growing quite fond of your company.”

“As I am, of yours,” he assured her. He bent down lower towards her, whispering in a soft voice, “Though, I must confess that I would hope to have you alone at some point today.”

The cold feeling was quickly vanquished by the warmth that flooded through her.

“I’ve thought about nothing since last night other than tasting your soft lips again,” he continued.

Convinced that the warmth in her body was visible through the flush in her cheeks, she whispered back to him, “I must admit the same, Your Grace.”

He squeezed her hand where it lay on his arm. “Then do not be surprised if I make an excuse to call you away from the prying eyes of others today to sneak kisses in dark corridors.”
