“Well, he is my nephew.” Lionel said. “I am quite happy that he has found Lady Lydia. I think she will make a great addition to the family.”

She looked away with her coy smile and Kitty returned to the pianoforte nonchalantly.

“I must say, your nephew’s reputation has been a bit of a concern for me,” Uncle Francis piped up. “And with the fact that we’ve yet to discuss any terms of the marriage settlement.”

“Viscount, you must not read too much into the gossip columns,” Lionel argued.

“Of course, who can tell fact from fiction in those stories?” Ranora asked, smiling still.

Lionel continued, “And there’s plenty of time still to work through the marriage settlement.”

“I’m concerned to have my niece marry your nephew to be frank,” Francis said. “I’ve had half a mind to take her back to London.”

“Uncle!” Lydia cried. “I believe you are being too harsh.”

“Indeed, every young man has had some fun in his youth,” Lionel added. “You have no reason to worry about Lady Lydia.”

“I do appreciate his candor, though,” Michael said, stepping through the door of the parlor, Joseph closely behind him.

Possessively, he sat closely next to Lydia on the settee.

“Tell me more, sir, about your concerns regarding my reputation and forthcoming marriage to your niece.”
