She put her fingers through the damp curls of his hair and lifted his eyes to hers. “I will let you, every chance I can,” she told him, bending down to place another kiss on his mouth.

Overcome with desire, he stood quickly and picked her up with him. She wrapped her legs around his waist as he walked her toward the bed then deposited her on her back on top of the covers. As she scooted up on the bed, he crawled over her, holding himself up over her.

“I am already aching for you,” she whispered, trying to pull him down on top of her. She spread her legs, arching her back, and he groaned. He took her mouth with his own as he lowered himself down on top of her, slowly sliding himself in between her folds. She took him easily, gasping with pleasure as he stretched her open.

“God,” he breathed, burying his face in her neck. Wrapping his hands behind her bottom, he settled himself inside her, relishing in the feeling for which he had yearned. Sliding in and out slowly, she whimpered underneath him, pressing him into him, her body begging for his. Her arms wrapped around his ribs, clinging to his shoulder blades.

As he made love to her, he realized there was nowhere else he wanted to be, no one else he wanted to be with. Every day that he could, he would endeavor to keep the promise he made to her. As though he could convince her with his body, he listened to every sound she made and felt every muscle she tensed, trying to fulfill her needs.

When her hold on him tightened, she whispered, “Please, do not stop. Right here…” Gasping, she sought her pleasure against him, grinding on him, squeezing him, digging her fingers into his shoulders. As her climax shook her, she pressed her mouth against the top of his shoulder, shuddering. He held her against him, letting her relish in the wave, feeling her pulse as she panted.

Once she recovered, relaxing into the bed, he whispered, “I will not need much longer…”

He moved within her, and her hips met his again, helping him to reach his own climax. Increasing his speed, he thrust within her, feeling his own pulse quickening with the effort. Knowing he would soon finish, he grasped her legs tightly and gave her a few last, firm thrusts before he expelled himself inside of her.

With a gasp, he fell on top of her, holding her tightly as they both tried to recover their breath. Edwina pressed kisses into the tops of his shoulders and stroked his head.

“I cannot believe how much I need you,” he whispered, rolling off to her side. “Tonight, for the past month, for the rest of my life.”

Edwina reached over and gently touched his face, her fingers tracing over his scars. He did not flinch, did not recoil from her. He did not have to worry if she felt disgusted by him; she had proven herself over and over. When she brushed her thumb over his lips, he took her wrist to stop her and kissed her thumb.

“What a terrible business arrangement we made,” she laughed, her eyes crinkling.

“I never should have made you agree to that,” he agreed, laughing lightly as well. “May I tell you something?”

“Always.”

He took a deep, shaky breath. “I have loved you since the first week we were married. I think I knew I would the first time I saw you. You have brought sunshine into my life. Where before I felt surrounded by darkness and fear and obscurity, you have brought me into the light, gave meaning to my life again. For that, I will always be grateful.”

She was quiet for a long moment, worrying Fergus about what she might be thinking. However, as soon as she spoke, his fears disappeared.

“You have given me more than I ever could have wanted,” she whispered. “I thought I would settle for at least a content friendship, security, a safe way of life. But you have given me so much more. I do not mean the title, the money, or the influence, but the love and the passion.”

“Do you think we will ever stop arguing?” he asked.

She laughed out loud, throwing her head back against the pillow. “Oh, no, my love. We are both too stubborn and opinionated. But, I suppose, we will learn to make those arguments more productive and less heated with trust and respect.”

Fergus traced a hand down her body, lingering on her bare stomach. “I cannot wait to have children with you. I think you will make a good, kind, caring mother.”

“And you will be a great father,” she agreed, stroking his cheek. “You will not be rid of me now.”

“I would never want to be,” he promised, drawing her closer to him. Exhaustion flowed over him. “For now, I just want to sleep, knowing that you will be by my side every day I wake.”

Edwina snuggled her warm body against his, closing her eyes with a content murmur. Breathing the scent of her in, he smiled and closed his own eyes, relinquishing himself to the first of many restful sleeps.
