Page 31 of Two Bosses For Her

Maybe she figures that she’s going to be blamed for this and therefore lose her job here. The theft of the files in no way is her. At least it appears that way right now. It can’t feel good that you’re under surveillance within the first week or so of your new job.

Looking out my door, I see Jeff coming down the hall toward Lily’s desk and I promptly sit up. He notices my movement and thinks better of approaching her now. Turning to his left, he heads away from the lobby.

Hell, maybe it’s Jeff being a creeper that has her locked up into a cocoon of sorts. I never thought Jeff would do this kind of stuff. Always up her ass about how pretty she is and how nice she looks. Jeff, she’s way out of your league, dude.

If there is any truth to what Lily says about him being in a car down the road from her house, spying on her, I’d be blown over. Jeff has worked here for years and has not ever gotten reprimanded for a single thing until the other day.

It takes all kinds I guess.

Whether it’s all three things or it’s none of them and something else entirely, I need to stop focusing on Lily and what ails her, getting my attention back on the situation at hand. Digging more through the information takes the better part of my day.

Late in the afternoon, I finally emerge from my office and see that Lily has a huge bouquet of roses sitting on the corner of her desk.

“Well, these are lovely!” I exclaim touching the soft velvety petal of one of the roses. “Who are they from, may I ask?”

“Yes, you may,” she says and stands from her seat, getting ready to leave for the day. “They’re from David.”

I nearly choke on her words as I try to swallow back the shock. I walk back into my office and wait until she has left for the day. I leave my office, walking past the roses and gently nudge them so that a few petals fall to the top of the desk and some grace the carpet of the floor.

I barge into David’s office asking, “Why?”

David looks at me bewildered and dismayed by my intrusion. “Why what?”

“Why did you send Lily the roses?” I point out the door to her desk, where the vase of flowers stood.

“I didn’t do it to show you up, if that’s your train of thought,” he says to me, tossing the papers from his hand onto the desk.

“Are you keeping it a secret or what?”

He chuckles and clarifies his answer. “It’s been a long while since I thought I could trust a woman again, but Lily is special.” David places a hand on my shoulder and looks at me, “She might be sleeping with my best friend, but at least she’s open about it.”

I remove his hand from my shoulder with a slight slap. Feeling the heat rise under my collar, I decide to leave before something terrible happens. I turn to leave his office and David calls behind me, “C’mon, I just want to see where this could go.”

Fucker. I’ll tell you where to go.

Lily

God, I’m so not in the mood to talk, let alone see that slimy prick. From the corner of my eye I can see Jeff slowly coming up the hall in the direction of my desk. But to my surprise, he turns in front of my desk, glaring at me as he leaves the lobby.

Feeling ill at ease by just his presence, my body involuntarily shudders as he passes by. A chilly breeze follows him out the door as he turns once more and sticks his tongue out at me. Ugh! Why?

His behavior around me has gone from sneering and licking his lips to showing up by my house. I don’t know where he gets off showing up in my neighborhood stalking me, but it better not happen again.

Creepy fucking creeper.

I’m done being nice to him and I’m grateful that he didn’t stop at my desk. Maybe one of the guys had a talk with him. I know because of privacy laws, neither David or James could tell me if they did in fact talk to him.

I hate being this way, but something about the man makes me uncomfortable. From now on, I plan on ignoring him.

David walks in from running a few errands carrying a huge vase of roses. Almost immediately my hands come up to cover my cheeks. He sets them on my desk and teases, “Oh, you thought these were for you?” He points to the vase of bright red roses.

My face feels hot and then he laughs. “Gotcha! They are for you. Your face turned this exact shade of red just before. Thanks for all you do around here,.” he leans in so that only I can hear. So close that his cologne collects in my nostrils, the heady scent of leather and spice going to my brain.

“And also I want to see where this thing between us will go,” he steps back and smiles broadly, placing a hand on my arm and squeezing it lightly.

The heat rises to my cheeks once more. “Thank you.”
