Page 37 of Two Bosses For Her

“What?”

“Look James, I really think we need to call in a pro.”

Great, here we go again. I roll my eyes and shake my head, not wanting to have this discussion again.

“What good would that do? Look, it just seems like a lot of unnecessary drama.”

We decide to call Lily in to talk to her, and see if she maybe knows anything. When she arrives, she frowns and looks at the both of us, clearly confused.

“What’s going on, guys?”

I lean forward and raise my brows, doing my best to keep my expression calm and even as I speak. I ask her who would have access to her computer, and she looks confused that we’d even ask. Shocked, really.

“Well, anyone could have access, I guess. I don’t have a password on it because everyone can log in, but they can only access the files they have clearance to, so I didn’t see the point.”

“Right,” I say with a nod, “But what about anything else?”

She looks back at me; her head tilted in confusion. “Like what?”

“I dunno anything.”

“I mean… besides the thumb drive, I haven’t noticed anything out of the ordinary. Why do you ask?”

I nod and sigh, wishing we didn’t have to go through all this questioning with Lily. I know that realistically we have to, I just don’t like it. And, judging by the look of growing annoyance on her face, she doesn’t either.

“James?” she asks, scowling. “What’s this about? What’s going on?”

“I can’t really say yet,” I say with a sigh, “we’re doing some investigating.”

She crosses her arms over her chest and cocks her hip, her gaze darting between David and myself.

“Are you two accusing me of something? Is that what this is?”

Well shit, this is exactly what I didn’t want to happen. I can tell she’s angry and while I can’t really blame her, it doesn’t mean that I have to like it.

“No Lily, that’s not it at all, we just have to ask these questions, you know how it is. We’d be shitty at our jobs if we didn’t explore every avenue on this. It’s nothing personal. I promise.”

“Nothing personal? Nothing personal my ass.”

She spits it out at the both of us before she turns on her heels and stalks out, a scowl on her face as she does.

“Well,” I say dryly, dragging my hand down my face. “That went well.”

Thirty-One

David

Standing in my office after Lily marched from the lobby, I shake my head in frustration with James. I can’t understand why he won’t call in a professional to investigate.

And now he’s insulted Lily.

After a wonderful night of sex and love.

What’s gotten into him is that he’s so damned gung ho that he’s tackling this huge problem insanely just like Don Quixote attacks windmills.

Such a fantastic book. One of my personal favorites, amongst a litany of others.

I sit down and try to focus on getting a few loose ends tied up.
