Page 48 of Two Bosses For Her

“Seriously?” She looks me in the eyes and realizes that I’m serious. “So, if you absolutely had to choose one, who would it be?”

Shaking my head, I say, “I can’t choose between them. They both are completely different and they both meet certain needs; shall I dare say?”

Rose stares at me blankly for a minute and says, “You know if…”

“Yeah, yeah, I know what Violet would say,” I chug a full drink of the martini, choking it down. “But I love them both and that’s that.”

At least for me it is.

Thirty-Nine

James

What the hell?

Who is this?

A new guy in a sharp suit and tie combo, walks by me whistling and then turns and says, “Good morning!” He blows by me quickly, heading to the back of the office and disappearing behind a closed door.

If David hired another person to work with the engineers, I’ll kick his ass in front of the entire office. We had always come to a hiring decision together. Frustrated beyond belief, I decide to confront David about his conclusion to hire without me even knowing.

I walk into his office and close the door, trying to keep my cool. “Hey man, what’s up?” he looks up from whatever he is working on as I shut the door.

“Hey. Got a minute?”

“Sure,” he says and then smiles. “For you, I’ve got two seconds.”

I chuckle but stop as I take a seat across from him. Hmm, this chair feels a lot nicer than the ones I have in my office. “Umm, I noticed a new guy out there.”

“Oh, yeah,” David says while he signs a purchase order. Placing his attention back on me and the conversation at hand, he says, “I hired a cyber security expert after yesterday’s debacle in your office.”

“Even after I asked you to not do such a thing?” I ask, astonished that he would be so bold as to admit it to my face. “But I thought that we had an agreement to not hire anyone without each other’s input.”

“James, in all honesty and being in the interest of being transparent, yes you have asked me to not hire an expert,” David sighs and interlocks his fingers together over the papers on his desk. “However, this breach and the ensuing stolen files has gone on way too long.”

And there it is. David is laying his cards on the table for me to see.

“That may be so, but I’m still unsure about thewhybehind you doing it,” I tell him as I cock my head to the side.

“If you think that it’s to undermine your attempts at solving this mystery, you’re dead wrong,” he says. “I only did it to help you and to speed up the process in solving this case. He’s going to help find the leak.”

I hang my head, looking at the floor. “Okay, I’ll give you that, but does this mean that in the future for hiring purposes, you’re going to continue going behind my back?” Even though he is right for calling my bluff, I’m still miffed about him hiring this guy anyway.

So much for kicking his ass in front of the whole office.

I look back up and watch as David leans back in his chair, looking at the ceiling. “No. Not if you’re not going to be so stubborn about it. Hopefully, there won’t be a next time for this.”

“Yeah, hopefully,” I respond. Feeling defeated and tired, I stand and leave his office, closing the door behind me.

Before I do, he says in a calm and concerned voice, “Uh, James?”

I turn around to face him, “Yeah?”

“Please get some sleep, you seem out of sorts lately,” he says.

I nod my head and close the door. As I turn to Lily’s desk, I see that she’s not in yet. Going into my office, I see her come off the elevator. “Why are you late today?”

She smiles and says, “Good morning to you as well.” She sets her items down and turns back to me. “I had a meeting with the police this morning.”
