With the window open, I listen to the breeze as it winds its way through the treetops, making the leaves dance together in their rustling. The drifting of the wind warns that winter is just around the corner, bringing the holidays with it.
Hazel is finished and squirming around in my arms. I lift the tiny human onto my shoulder, patting its back gently until she burps. After changing her, I lay her in the cradle next the bed and I gather myself up on my bed, curling beneath the covers,
The cool breeze flows silently around the room as I drift off to sleep, content and at peace with the world. My world.
Awakened by the sound of the baby cooing, I look up to see David holding her and bouncing her in his arms. “Hi there, hot little momma,” he says with a great big smile planted on his lips. “Sleep well?”
Stretching my body out over the bed, I yawn and then sit up. “I did.” When I look at the time, I begin to freak out at the amount of time that I slept.
Nearly four hours!
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to sleep so long,” I say, rubbing my eyes from the sand in them.
“Hey, take it easy,” David says. “It’s not like you don’t need it, your body’s still healing from birth.”
I smile halfheartedly, still tired. “Is James here too?”
“Yeah, he had her time with our little Hazel nut a little bit ago. And now it’s my turn, isn’t it little cutie,” he raises his voice high and does that baby talk to her. “She just smiled! A real smile!”
I quickly get off the bed to watch her face as David does the little voice again. “Oh my! How cute is that!” I exclaim.
James comes in from the study across the hall to see Hazel in action. “What’d she do, what did she do?” he asks excitedly, wanting to be part of some of her ‘first’ times.
“Watch,” David says, looking at James, then back at Hazel. “You’re my little Hazel nut, huh?” he questions in the same silly voice.
And she smiles again.
James jumps for joy and takes a couple of pictures of her smiling until she’s tired of it. That’s right, they take center stage all the time until they get a little older. If the baby’s tired, she wails until she gets to bed, if the baby’s hungry a louder wail until she gets fed.
But I wouldn’t change a thing.
As I stand back and watch the interaction between the guys and Hazel, I realize that my entire world resides with these three people. It doesn’t matter if we are poor and homeless, as long as these three are with me, that’s all I need for us to do anything and everything.
I leave the guys with Hazel and go downstairs to the kitchen. I was about to make dinner, but I see that it’s already made. They had set the table and prepared a roast with veggies.
The best men ever.
As winter comes and goes, spring is in full bloom outside, The scents of hyacinth and creeping phlox float on the drifting winds with their intoxicating fragrance. All over our house, new life is brimming.
Including the one in my belly.
Looking down at Hazel, I see her rolling around on the floor, grabbing her toes and drooling all over the place. “What’re you doing? Do your toes taste yummy?”
I tickle her belly and she giggles a little. Her smile brings with it a joy for me that I’d never had known. One that my mother had as I remember her looking at all of us kids with the same grateful and loving look.
The guys will be home soon and Hazel will sleep for the night.
When the guys get home, they walk into a mess of pink and blue streamers and balloons.
“What’s…wait a minute,” David says, hinting at a smile.
“Are you…again?” James asks with a knowing look.
“Yes and yes,” I say looking at each man. “I’m pregnant once again. But don’t scream, I just put Hazel down.” They’re so thrilled that they run to me and James picks me up, carrying me to the bedroom with David hot on his heels.
I guess there is something that makes men horny when their woman announces a pregnancy. James and David rip off my clothes, throwing them to the side and then strip themselves as well.
On the bed, David begins to kiss me, telling me, “I love you so very much, Lily.”
