“I know the duke will not allow anything to happen to you again.” Sarah did not know the extent of the danger they faced, and must have thought Bridget was referring to the poisoning now.

“I know that Sarah, but what about him? He is in danger, too. Perhaps more than I am.”

Sarah squeezed her hand comfortingly. “No one will triumph over you and the duke. I truly believe that.”

Bridget smiled. “Thank you, Sarah. I would be lost without you.” She wanted to hug her but Cato was quite possessive of her.

“Oh, you would have been fine.” Her blue eyes moved to the window then quickly looked away, her cheeks coloring. Bridget tried to see what had flustered her friend but only found Mr. Meyer crossing the garden.

Bridget gasped as the realization settled on her. “Sarah?”

“Yes?” Sarah looked up but she was still deeply flushed.

“I believe I have another match to ensure.” A wide grin overtook her face.

“Bridget…Jason and I—" Sarah clapped a hand over her mouth.

“Jason, eh?” Bridget teased her. “I suppose you were going to tell me that nothing is happening between you and him.”

“It is uncertain,” Sarah confessed. “I wanted to tell you but I do not know how he feels about me. I know you will push for a match.”

“How do you feel about him?”

Sarah smiled. “I think I am ruined. I can never want another man.”

Bridget squealed and held her arm out. “Forgive me, Cato, but I must hug Sarah.” The dog protested when they squeezed him between them. “You have to tell him how you feel, Sarah.”

“But—"

“Has he shown you passion?”

“Yes.” Her cheeks would not stop coloring. “Very much.”

“Does your heart tell you that he is your match and equal?”

“Yes!”

“Then tell him.”

“What if he does not love me?”

“You cannot know until you give yourself the chance to speak.”

Sarah’s eyes sparkled. “You have grown rather wise for a very young woman.”

“Well, having a husband and a very large dog might have hastened my growth.”

Sarah giggled. “He is a very large dog, indeed, and I think you are tired from holding him for so long.” She lifted Cato’s ear and said, “Bridget needs to have her bath now.” He did not move and they laughed. Sarah had to pull him off Bridget, and he whimpered before climbing back onto the divan and occupying Sarah’s seat.

“Well, at least it is not your lap, Bridget.” She made toward the dressing room where the bathwater waited.

Bridget followed her with a question. “Will you help me find another lady’s maid?”

Sarah looked as though she had not been expecting such a question. “I am not marrying yet. I do not knowifI will marry at all.”

“In the event that you marry,” Bridget corrected.

“Of course, I will help you. She will have to pass several tests before I recommend her. Only the best for a duchess.”
