“Harry, what have you done to our garden!” she breathed, and he laughed.
“They were procured especially for you.” He took her hand and pulled her into his arms as her heart swelled.
“And how long have you been standing here?” She stood on her tiptoes to kiss his cheek.
“As long as I needed to.” He glanced at the sofa and confessed, “When I heard your footsteps.”
She giggled. Harry withdrew a single primrose and an iris from behind him and offered them to her.
“These are from our garden.”
“Oh, Harry!”
“Irises symbolize valor and hope.” He tucked the iris into her hair. “You gave me those, Bridget.” He was going to make her cry, and she sucked in her lips as the tears pricked her eyes.
“With you, I found the courage to fight for our love. I forgave myself.” He rested his forehead against hers and whispered, “You are my hope.”
Bridget could not stop the tears from falling and he brushed them away. Next, he tucked the primrose stalk between her fingers. “Primroses mean love and protection. I will always love you and protect you, for the rest of my life, and even beyond that.”
Bridget stuck the primrose into the buttonhole of his coat. “You are my treasure, Harry. Thank you for accepting my father’s proposal and letting me find you.”
“Always,” he whispered, taking her lips in an impossibly sweet kiss.
