In the negative column, she had walked out on him with very little notice. Truthfully, she couldn’t blame him if he let her go.

Oddly, that thought didn’t bother her as much as it should. She definitely would explore her other options after she quit feeling numb.

That afternoon, she decided to take herself out for an early dinner. Being cooped up inside was not helping her mood. She put on the black pants and teal sweater she had worn on the trip back from Wyoming. It was a deliberate choice. She needed to make new memories, even with her favorite clothes. It had rained earlier, but the rain had stopped, leaving the air misty and cool. She chose low-heeled pumps and decided to walk to the restaurant. Her black raincoat was lined. It would keep her warm enough. She picked up her purse and her keys, ready to depart, but the doorbell rang.

The young couple in the apartment across the hall ordered takeout frequently. Delivery people who didn’t pay attention often ended up at India’s door. But just in case—because she was security conscious—she put her eye to the peephole to see who it was.

The man standing on the other side of her door was definitely not a delivery person. He had his hands shoved in his pockets. His expensive overcoat made him look like he had stepped out of the pages of a magazine.

Her heart bounced in joy and then dropped to her shoes. Why had Farris come? Why now when she had forced herself to think positively, to take her eyes off the past and look toward the future?

The doorbell rang a second time. She could almost hear Farris’s impatience.

With a preternatural sense of calm, she opened the door. “Farris. What are you doing here?”
