Nowhere in this unwritten contract did it mention lovers or romance or even closure. In her gut, she knew she should leave. Tomorrow. Before it was too late. She could take Dottie to New York...care for her there.

Even as the plan formed, she knew it was hopeless. Dottie wanted to be in Wyoming. And Farris wanted to be close to his mother.

All India could do was pretend Farris was no one to her. Just another man. Just another acquaintance. It would be difficult, because she was still attracted to him. Whatever curious magic had bound them that very first day in Central Park had survived intact, at least where India was concerned.

Perhaps she had inherited a snippet of her father’s unfortunate gambling problem. Despite every bit of evidence that had suggested she and Farris weren’t a good match, she had rolled the dice anyway.

And lost...

She should despise Farris for what he had done to their marriage...to her.

But that wasn’t who she was as a person. She couldn’t sustain such a level of hate and bitterness. Even as an orphaned teenager, she had known that her attitude would determine her future.

The truth was, she had moved on after the divorce. Her life was great. One day soon, she hoped to meet a man who wanted to build a home and a family with her. She was more open to the idea now, more ready to be vulnerable again. She believed the time would come, if she was patient.

Despite everything that had happened to her, she knew families were worth having. At their best, they cared for and supported each other. Even though her father had gambled away her security, and her onetime husband had nearly destroyed her with his cold, aloof cruelty, she had promised herself she would build something better, something lasting, something wonderful.

Sometimes the Fates demanded the scales be balanced. Dottie was a woman to whom India owed a debt of love. Because India understood that family devotion occasionally meant sacrifice, she would be the daughter and friend Dottie needed in these next weeks.

A divorce decree couldn’t sever the tie between India and the mother figure she still loved.

Only one thing worried India. Did Farris somehow have an unbreakable hold on her heart? Was that why it was so shocking to see him again?
