“For what?”

“For being here at the right time. It means a lot to me.”

He pressed a kiss to her shoulder. “We go way back, Fliss. You’re helping me with Ayla, and I’ll support you through this. Now, go to sleep. The baby will be up at dawn whether we’re ready for her or not.”

It had been a very long time since Felicity had slept with a man—really slept. It was like falling into a cloud. She inhaled the familiar scent of Wynn’s soap, reveled in the touch of his body against hers...and she slept. Deeply. Cathartically.

Sometime in the middle of the night, she woke up needing to pee. When she tried to climb out of bed, Wynn’s arms tightened around her. “Don’t go,” he mumbled, clearly half-asleep.

“I’ll be right back,” she whispered.

She was gone hardly anytime at all. Yet Wynn snored softly when she returned. He had left the lamp on for her comfort. She turned it off before rounding the bed. Lifting the sheet and blanket with care, she reclaimed her original spot. Her groggy bedmate made a sound of approval and dragged her close again.

Felicity was shocked to feel his erection nestle in the cleft of her ass.

They were both fully clothed. Wynn was a virile man holding a woman. His response was natural, even in sleep.

But Felicity wasn’t asleep at all. And she wanted him.

So very much.

Maybe this was a need-to-affirm-life thing, but she felt her arousal build and build until she was literally unable to be still.

She eased onto her back. Now one of Wynn’s legs trapped one of hers. He lay half on top of her, his face buried in the curve of her neck.

In the broad light of day, she might have talked herself out of this impulsive grab for comfort. But it was dark, and she’d been through a shock, and all she wanted was the sweet oblivion of sex. With Wynn.

“Wynn,” she whispered. Even in this situation, the issue of consent was an ethical consideration. Besides, she wanted his full cooperation.

“Wynn...” She kissed the side of his cheek, felt the stubble and the hot skin. “Are you awake?”

He groaned. “I am now,” he muttered.

“Make love to me,” she whispered.

He froze, not a single muscle in his body moving. And now that he was fully awake, he had to know his body was ready to play.

Carefully, he eased onto his back, no longer touching her at all. “I don’t think that’s a good idea, Fliss. You’re not thinking straight.”

She cupped him through his sleep pants. “I don’t want to think,” she said. “I want to feel.”

He grabbed her wrist and held her hand away from his body. “We’re not going to do this,” he said, the words rusty and low. “Go back to sleep.”

“I can’t. Besides, you probably knew this would happen when you asked me to come live with you.”

“But not tonight. Not when you’re lost and confused. I won’t take advantage of you, Fliss.” Wynn cursed under his breath, sat up and turned on the lamp. He raked both hands through his hair. “You’re hurt and you’re afraid. This is an impulse on your part. It doesn’t take a shrink to see what’s happening. Using sex to forget the world is a recipe for disaster.”

“Maybe if I had picked up a guy at a bar. But not with you.”

Wynn scrambled out of the bed, his expression hunted. “I need to check on the baby.”

He disappeared with comical speed.

Felicity tried to analyze the situation. Was she being unfair to him? The poor man was trying to be a hero, a stand-up kind of guy.

She had to make this right.
