May as well have been miles away.

Damon regained his balance and sped up. Closed the distance.

Boone stopped at the front door, dug into his pockets.

Damon reached the driveway.

Then the steps.

Jingle.

Boone was unlocking the door.

“Wait!” Damon called.

Boone spun around. The porch light illuminated the surprise in his eyes. He tensed.

“We need to talk.” Damon pretended he wasn’t trying to catch his breath.

“What do you need?” Boone scowled, his disdain seething through his tone.

“Do you really have to ask?”

“Are you referring to me telling your wife to mind her own business?” Boone asked.

“It sounds like you told her more than that.”

Boone’s brows drew together. “I told her and Lia there was nothing to worry about, and they called the cops anyway. It was my call to make.”

“Did you threaten my wife?”

“No.” Boone stared him down.

“Are you sure?” Damon took a step closer, anger swirling in his chest.

“I told them to mind their own business. Like I said.”

“You didn’t say, ‘or else’? Or tell them to watch their backs?” Damon struggled to keep his composure, to keep his voice even. He balled his fists.

“I can’t remember my exact words. It’s been a hell of a day, as I’m sure you can imagine. My house crawling with cops, and all of that.”

“Not to mention your wife is missing.”

“She’s taken off for a weekend getaway before. That’s all this is. Ariana hasn’t ever done that?”

“Not without telling me.”

“Guess Rita doesn’t feel like she needs to ask my permission for things like this.” Boone shrugged and turned toward his door.

Everything took on a red hue. Damon inched closer, raising his fists.

Boone stepped to the side and gestured toward his doorbell. “Sure you want to get this on video? Wave to the camera.”

Damon didn’t lower his arm or take his attention off Boone. “Ari tells me where she’s going because we respect each other. She wouldn’t want me worrying — like she’s worried about Rita now.”

“To each their own. I need to go inside now and get some sleep. You should do the same. Wouldn’t want your wife worrying.” Boone smirked.

“Why aren’t you worried about Rita? Nobody who expected to see her today did, or even heard from her.”

Boone stared Damon down. “Don’t tell me how to run my marriage. In fact, don’t tell me what to do about anything. Now leave my property before I call the police.”

“If you hurt Ariana—”

“She has nothing to worry about — if she stays out of my business.” Boone opened the door and stepped inside. “You have five seconds to get off my property before I make that call.”

Damon flipped him the bird. “You’re the one who needs to watch your back!”

Boone waved to him.

Damon stormed across the street.
