Just a maintenance man. He wore brown coveralls and carried a clipboard, just like many of the other hired help in the neighborhood.

“Who is he?” Ariana asked.

“Plumber, maybe. Let’s get going.”

She stepped closer to the sidewalk, staring at the man.

Damon caught up with her. “Why are you so interested in him?”

“I’ve never seen that guy before.”

“A new hire?”

“While Boone’s wife is missing and he’s been under investigation?” she asked.

“Boone’s clear now.”

“I’m going to talk to him.”

“What?” Damon said.

“It looks like he’s snooping.”

“He’s doing his job.”

“I’m not leaving until I know for sure.” She marched across the street.

Damon threw his arms in the air and hurried after her. “You don’t think this will piss off Boone if he hears about this?”

“I’m just being a good neighbor by checking out someone suspicious on his property.”

“Right.”

“I am.” She hurried over to the man. “Excuse me.”

He turned to her, holding his clipboard close. A patch on his coveralls indicated he worked for a bug removal service. “Yes?”

The man was tall and handsome. He could be on the big screen. Maybe Rita had hired him, choosing him for his looks to annoy Boone.

“What are you doing?” Ariana asked.

“Looking for insects.” He tugged on the patch with the company logo.

A business Damon had never heard of before.

Didn’t mean it wasn’t legit. New companies popped up every day. But it was curious.

“I didn’t realize Boone and Rita hired an exterminator,” Ari said.

“They did.” The man turned around and looked at a bush, keeping the clipboard against his chest.

“When did they hire you?” she asked.

“I’d have to check my records.”

“What’s your name?”

“If you want a card, I’ll have to get one from my truck.”
