And she got it.

Hardly able to believe it, she yanked the drawer open.

Lia whipped around. “You got into her desk?”

“One drawer.”

“Anything interesting?”

“I don’t know yet.”

“Let me know. So far, I’m not finding anything in these books.”

“Don’t give up. She could have one scrap of paper tucked in between the pages that gives us the answers we need.”

“I wish Boone would let us into the house.”

“You and me both.” Ariana dug through the drawer. It appeared to only have office supplies — pens, a calculator, some stamps, and other things. But it was locked. There had to be something useful in there.

She pulled out each item, placing it on top of the desk. Nothing, nothing, nothing.

This could take all week.

“I found something!” Lia said, and held up a book about the Virgin Islands.

“What?” Ariana abandoned the desk and ran over.

Lia pulled out a folded piece from a yellow legal pad.

“Open it.” Ari resisted the urge to grab it from her.

“I’m trying.” Lia handed her the book and unfolded the paper.

Ariana waited, hardly able to breathe. Were they about to find out the real name of her boyfriend? Or the code for the safe? Something else equally helpful?

Lia frowned.

Ari’s heart sank. “What?”

“Just a shopping list.” Lia showed her. “Looks like gifts she intended to buy people on her trip to the islands.”

“Let me see.” Ariana studied it, trying to figure out if there was a hidden code. But she recognized one of the items on the list — the same brand of jewelry box that Rita had given Ariana for her last birthday. She handed the paper back to Lia. “Hang onto that. Maybe it’ll come in handy later.”

“I doubt it, but okay,” Lia said.

Ariana returned to the desk and pulled the rest of the items out of the drawer. Reached in and felt around.

Bumped something soft at the top. Felt like a little book. Tape held it up.

She had to angle herself uncomfortably, but managed to pull it loose.

A little black notebook with a shiny snakeskin cover.

This had to hold good information.
