“Yeah. She must’ve used similar coding strategies in middle school.”

“What does it say?” Ari asked.

“Rita was tracking Boone’s affairs. I’m going take pictures of these pages.”

“Good thinking.” Ariana picked the lock of the top desk drawer to the right. It was just as tricky to unlock as the other one had been.

But she managed to open it, this time a little faster.

Manila files and folders were stacked in this one. Ariana pulled them out and put them on the desk.

A silver locked box sat beneath them.

“Look at that,” she said.

Lia gasped. “Can you break into that?”

“Sure.” Ariana took it out and used her tools.

The box was even more challenging than the desk drawers, but she still managed to get it.

Click.

“How do you do that?” Lia demanded.

“Plenty of practice.”

“I know who I’m calling next time I lock myself out. Forget the locksmith.”

“Next time?” Ari asked, in a teasing tone.

“You know me. I’d forget my hair if it wasn’t attached to my scalp. What’s in there?”

A white rectangular paper sat on top. Ariana picked it up and flipped it over.

An ultrasound image of a baby.

Lia covered her mouth, then grabbed the paper. “Is she pregnant?”

Ariana scanned the notes at the top. “It’s dated last week.”

“Seriously?” Lia held it closer to the light. “Oh my gosh. I feel like we shouldn’t be seeing this.”

“No, this is huge.”

“Obviously. She wants to leave Boone, and she’s pregnant. It has to be her boyfriend’s. Does he know? Is he Mitch?”

Ariana sat in the chair and took deep breaths. “We better call Detective Rojas.”

“Maybe we should see if we can find out more first. Once the cops get involved, they’re going to shove us out of here. We’re her friends — if anyone should be going through her personal items, it’s us.”

“Let’s at least go through the rest of this lockbox,” Ari said. “Maybe we can find out more about the pregnancy.”

Lia held the image upside down and sideways. “Does this have the dad’s name on it?”

“Not that I saw.” Ariana took out the next paper. Another ultrasound, same day.

“It says six weeks,” Lia said. “Do you think she just found out? Six weeks is super early.”
