Ari’s stomach lurched. Either they were in trouble, or they had bad news about Rita.

“Yes,” Damon said. “What’s this about?”

“We need to inform you of something.”

Ariana cried out. “You found Rita.”

The other officer shook her head. “No, this doesn’t have anything to do with your missing friend.”

“What, then?”

“I’m sorry to have to tell you that your house is on fire.”

Ariana stared, unblinking. Unable to speak. Unable to process her words.

“Fire?” Damon exclaimed.

“Yes. It’s all over the police radio. Firefighters are on the scene, fighting the blaze.”

“How bad is it?” Ariana asked.

“I don’t know,” she said. “But I’ll follow you to make sure you get there safely.”

Everything went by in a blur as she and Damon climbed into his car and headed back home. Neither spoke.

The police had to be wrong. Why would their home be on fire? They always checked the stove before leaving.

Boone.

He’d already admitted to buying supplies to torch Rita’s bar and grill. He would care even less about Ari and Damon’s house.

The man had nothing to lose.

Before they reached their community gate, the emergency lights shone and bounced.

Her heart sank, the reality of the situation hitting like a punch to the gut.

Their home was burning.

The guard offered his condolences as he waved them in.

Lights grew brighter and sirens sounded as they neared their street.

Damon turned to her. “Are you ready for this?”

“No.”

“Me neither.”

He turned on their road. Flames lit everything.

A crowd gathered down the street. Three large fire trucks blocked their view of the house.

Was it only a surface fire, or would it destroy everything they owned?

Tears blurred her vision. “This can’t be real. It can’t.”

Damon pulled over two blocks down from the house. It was the closest they could get. Then he unbuckled and held her, maneuvering around the center console. “I’ll kill him.”
