“You may as well come to me,” he said. “I’m going to find you either way.”

Rita tightened the rope behind her. Inched away from him.

He stepped into the room. “You’ve caused quite a stir.”

She used the wall as a guide to keep moving away from him. Checked to make sure she wouldn’t bump into anything. Any noise would alert him to her location.

“Aren’t you curious about what’s been going on in your absence?” he asked.

He took another step. This time closer to her.

Rita froze. Waited.

“There’s no point in hiding. I’ll find you.”

She pressed her back against the wall. Moved closer toward the door. Her only chance of escape.

“I always win,” he said. “You know that. Give up now.”

Rita charged for him. Crashed into him.

Knocked him back several feet. He landed against the wall. Gasped.

She ran into the hallway.

Mitch had caught her the last time she got out.

Boone would not.

Rita turned off the lights as she went. Took in as much of the rooms as she could before the darkness shrouded everything.

Footsteps sounded behind her. “That was a big mistake.”

Almost to the front door.

Light shone all around, blinding her. Hurting her eyes.

Boone cackled. “Finally have you where I want you.”

She reached for the locks. Twisted the top one.

Two more to go.

“Not so fast, my pretty.”

“Are you the Wicked Witch of the West now?”

“You can speak,” he said.

Rita struggled with the second lock. It resisted, sticking in place.

He lunged for her.

She darted out of the way. Ran for a window. Tried to unlock it.

Boone grabbed at her. Barely missed.

Rita raced around him.
