“In my mind it was.” He kissed her forehead. “I fell for you hard and fast.”

“I guarantee you I fell harder and faster.” She half-smiled at the thought.

“Then your parents found out who my dad was. It was as if the world had set us up to fail, but look at us now.”

“Nothing tore us apart.”

“Never will.” He gave her a lingering kiss.

“Why does trouble follow us around?”

“All of this will be behind us soon. This is just a minor setback.”

“Minor?” she exclaimed. “Two people are dead, and they’ve been buried under our ground all this time. Imagine what their families are going through, not knowing what happened to them.”

Damon rubbed her back. “I love that you care so much about people, but I hate that it runs you through the wringer.”

“How am I supposed to not be upset over this?”

“You should be. But the detectives will figure out who the victims were, then the families will be given closure. People will get answers they’ve been desperate to find.” Damon led her to where the water was lapping the sand.

She watched the gentle waves expose and cover a shell.

He sat and pulled her onto his lap.

Ari leaned her head against his and took comfort in his embrace. At least they were together. She wouldn’t want to go through any of this alone, and she didn’t have to. He was the love of her life, and they had each other’s backs. They always would.

Hopefully it would be enough.
