ChapterSix

Ariana returned to Rita and Lia.

“Is Damon okay?” Lia asked, concern in her eyes.

Her stomach turned to ice. “I hope so.”

“He’s still upset about what the cop said?”

“I think so. He didn’t want to talk about it.”

Rita gave her a quick hug. “If you want some girl time, come by the restaurant in an hour or two. I’ll be able to break away from the mayor’s party by then. Drinks are on me.”

“If Damon hasn’t returned yet, I might take you up on that.”

“Even if he has, you can still head over. I need to catch you two up on some things.” Rita rubbed her belly.

A flash of jealousy crossed Lia’s face, but then it disappeared just as quickly. “We’ve been waiting.”

“An hour or two.” Rita kissed them both on the cheek before speeding away.

“What was that about?” Ariana asked.

“What?” Lia asked.

“That look you gave Rita.”

“I didn’t give her any look.” Lia spun around and marched across the street toward her house.

Ari caught up with her and put her hand on Lia’s arm. “If it’s too difficult to talk about, you don’t have to.”

“She’s my friend. Of course I want to know about her baby. We don’t even know if the father is Boone or Mitch.”

“But you and Charles have been trying—”

“And sometimes it just takes time. If my doctor isn’t worried, then neither am I.”

“If you say so.”

“I do.” Lia hurried inside the house.

Ariana caught up with her. They went inside and cleaned up what was left from dinner.

“Who do you think put the bodies there?” Lia asked. “It has to be someone from the neighborhood. It would be far too difficult to sneak bodies in and bury them.”

Ari wanted to say something about the sharp change in subject, but bit her tongue. “It has to be the previous owners. I’ve heard they moved rather suddenly.”

“That makes sense.”

“Did they seem like killers to you?”

“Charles and I never met them. We moved in right after you and Damon.”

“I forgot about that,” Ari said. “Damon and I will have to ask around.”

“Good idea. They do seem to be the logical choice. I wonder if it could be someone else, though.”

“Who?”
