ChapterNine

Ariana yawned and fought her heavy eyelids. Damon still wasn’t back. She tried to remember when he said he’d return, but with all the drama between Rita and Lia she couldn’t recall. Not to mention the interrogations and having to put their house plans on hold.

It was all too much. But at least Rita was back safe and sound, her captors in prison. Everything would be fine.

Once Damon returned.

Or maybe this was a conversation to have in the morning. It was getting late enough that she would have a hard time keeping up. Sleep pressed on her like a weighted blanket.

This also wasn’t the first time her husband had taken off to gather his thoughts and decompress. It was something he needed when the pressure was on.

Hopefully he was making the best use of his time, because when he returned she needed his support to get through this.

She finally relented and closed her eyes.

Creak.

The door. Damon was back.

Ariana bolted upright.

The bed shifted under his weight. “I’m sorry, babe. I didn’t mean to wake you.”

“You didn’t.”

“Don’t tell me you’ve been waiting.”

She didn’t say anything.

“You need your sleep.”

“I need you.”

He wrapped his arms around her. “In that case, I have bad news.”

Ari’s breath hitched. “What?”

“I’m going to go somewhere.”

“Come again?”

Damon drew a deep breath. “I did some serious thinking while I was out. The best thing I can do for you is to put space between us.”

“That’s the worst thing you can do for me.”

“All of this is my fault.”

“All of what?” she asked.

“Everything.”

“I really don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“The bodies, everything.”

She hesitated. “Unless you killed them, nothing is your fault.”

He didn’t respond.
