“Expecting us?” asked Rojas, adjusting her jacket.

“Why would I be?” Ariana said.

“You’re standing here.”

“I was going across the street to see Rita.”

“How’s she holding up?” Detective Rojas’ expression softened. “It isn’t often enough that cases like her end up as happily as this one did.”

“She’s back to normal, working and everything. Always been tough as nails, so I’m sure that helps.”

Rojas nodded. “Mental toughness can be critical. I’m glad to hear she’s adjusting to her new normal.”

Kamada and the uniformed officers went to Ariana’s property.

“Life without Boone is easier on her, though I doubt you’re here to discuss that.”

“Right. We’ve ID’d one of your bodies.”

“They aren’t mine.”

“I meant on your property.”

“Then say that,” Ariana said. “Who was it?”

“One of the previous owner’s nannies. The other one is also a young woman, so we suspect she may be another nanny.”

“Why are you telling me so much?” Ariana asked. “Open investigation and all of that.”

“I thought you’d like to know. Did you ever meet the people who lived there before you?”

“No. They moved away suddenly. Didn’t we go over this already?”

Rojas nodded. “Do you know if any of your neighbors saw them move? Or if it was a deal where they left in the middle of the night?”

“I don’t know. You’d have to ask them.”

“That’s my plan.”

“Thanks for letting me know about the nannies,” Ari said, and stepped off the sidewalk. “I’ll see you around.”

“One more thing.”

She held back a groan. “Yes?”

“Make sure you and your husband stay in town.”

“Meaning?”

“We might have more questions. Stick around.” Detective Rojas looked around. “Where is your husband?”

“He’s out. He’ll be back.”

Eventually.

“Pass the message along to him, will you?”

“You got it.” Ariana hurried across the street.
