ChapterTwelve

Ariana glanced out the window. “The crowd is mostly gone. Do you want to go outside?”

Rita emptied another water bottle. “Yeah, sure. Can you tell what’s going on over there?”

“Whatever is happening is next door to Lia and Charles.”

“It’s like this neighborhood is cursed.”

Ari tensed.

“What?” Rita said.

“Damon used that same word last night.”

“Great minds, right?”

Ariana frowned.

Rita tugged her toward the door. “Let’s find out what all the commotion is about. Maybe it isn’t as bad as it seems.”

“Seriously? You saw those police cruisers. Whatever’s going on can’t be good.”

“We won’t know until we find out.” Rita pulled her outside.

A van marked ‘Coroner’ drove by.

“Someone died?” Rita exclaimed.

“Or another body was dug up.”

“Wishful thinking. But really, that would be great for you and Damon. The police would have to look at other people.”

And maybe Damon would come back early.

The house next to the Gillon’s had police tape across the yard.

Rita hurried to one of the neighbors and asked questions.

Ari stood back, taking in the scene. The police had left her property for now. They were all two houses over.

Maybe Rita was right. This could be good news. The focus would move off them even more. She and Damon had no connection to the dead nannies, and now the new body wasn’t even near their property.

This nightmare could be over soon, and they could go back to designing their new home. And that would mean Damon could put the whole curse notion behind him.

She pulled out her phone to call him, but stopped. Before she tried to convince him to return, she needed the full story. She hurried over to Rita and the other lady whose name she couldn’t remember. They’d only spoken in passing a few times.

“What’s going on?” Ariana asked.

“We were right,” Rita said. “Another body.”

“Do they know who it was?” Ari asked.

Both women shook their heads no.

“Claire said there was a body bag, but that was all anyone could see.”

“The police were in the backyard the whole time,” Claire said. “Until they came out with the bag.” She shuddered. “Do you think there will be more?”
