He held her tightly. “Is everything okay?”

“Charles didn’t come home last night. Lia’s—”

“What?”

“I think she waited up all night.”

He swore. “What’s wrong with him?”

“I was hoping you’d have some ideas.”

“Not at the moment, but I’ll think it over while I get ready.”

Ari kissed his cheek. “Thank you. There’s some coffee ready downstairs. I’m going to get in the shower. Our appointment is in an hour?”

“Yeah.”

She hurried into the bathroom, her mind buzzing. With everything else going on, she hadn’t needed nearly as much caffeine as she’d thought.

If only they could all go back in time. Even just two months ago, everything was normal and happy.

No. It wasn’t. That was only the surface. Rita had been dealing with a psychotic husband, but keeping a smile on her face. Charles and Lia were having troubles conceiving, but acting like it was no big deal. And there were bodies buried in their neighborhood.

On her and Damon’s property.

It still seemed surreal. Especially now that one of them tied back to Cal Jones.

Ariana changed her mind. She didn’t want to go back in time, she wanted to fly forward. To see the day when her new house was habitable, when Lia could show her a positive pregnancy test, and when the mystery of the bodies was solved.

That would be a good day.

But it would be at least a few months. It would take that long to build the new house.

At least after today, their property would be theirs again. They could break ground on the new home. Assuming the detectives kept their word and finished their work by the end of the day.

Ariana was eager to leave for the appointment when she finished getting ready.

She found Damon in the living room, sipping coffee and texting.

“Did you find him?” she asked.

“No. He’s not reading any of his texts.”

“What’s his problem?”

“He’s crumbling under the stress. On top of everything else, he has work worries.”

“Lia’s stressed too,” Ari said. “He needs to be here with her.”

“I agree. We can drive by the bar and look for his car on the way to the architect.”

“Good idea. I think—”

Ding-dong!

“Maybe that’s him,” Ariana said.

“He has keys.”
