“Have you had other nannies?” Maya asked after they pulled into a parking spot.

“What?” Brigit’s face lost color again. “Uh, yeah. A few.”

“A few? They don’t last long?”

“Well, you know, they’re usually in college or something.”

“What was your last nanny like?”

Brigit dropped the keys. “We better get inside. I can’t be late picking up the kids. Remember that. Any late fees will come out of your paycheck if you don’t pick them up on time.”

“Understood. You don’t have to worry about me. Punctuality is my middle name.”

Brigit gave her a flustered smile before getting out of the car.

Maya followed her and hung back as Brigit signed out the two kids and chatted with the receptionist and other parents.

Barely two minutes passed before a perky teenager brought a little boy and girl to Brigit. Both had the same light hair as their mother.

Brigit brought them over. “This is Lola and Noah. Kids, meet—”

“Olivia?” Lola said, her eyes wide.

“You’re back!” Noah threw his arms around Maya.

“No,” Brigit said. “She only looks like Olivia. This is Maya.”

Lola crossed her arms. “No, that’s Olivia.”

“They just look alike,” Brigit insisted.

Maya turned to her. “Who’s Olivia?”

“You,” Noah said.

“My name is Maya.”

Both kids shook their heads.

“I know it’s confusing,” Brigit said. “But she isn’t Olivia. Let’s hurry. We need to meet Daddy for lunch. Can’t be late.”

“Or he’ll be mad,” Lola said.

“Does he get mad a lot?” Maya asked.

“No,” Brigit said quickly. “He just has a busy schedule and needs to return to work.”

On the way back to the house, the kids talked about school nonstop.

It gave Maya the time she needed to mentally prepare for lunch. Chances were, if something bad had happened to her twin, it was the husband who had done it. Whatever it was.

And Maya would get to the bottom of it.

Her pulse quickened as they approached the house. A red Maserati now sat in the driveway.

Was she about to meet the man who knew where Olivia was?

“Daddy’s home!” Noah squealed.
