“If it’s him.”

“It has to be,” Maya said. “One look at him, and it’s obvious he feels he has something to prove. Those are the dangerous ones.”

“I’m going to call Charles,” Lia said, and started walking toward her house. “He needs to know about this.”

Ari turned back to Maya. “Do you want me to go with you? I’m more than happy to.”

“That would be great.”

Ariana turned to Rita. “You coming?”

Rita pulled out her phone. “I think I better go to the bar. Meet me there after?”

“Sure.”

Rita said goodbye and headed toward her house.

“The bar?” Maya asked.

“She owns a bar and grill.”

“Gotcha.”

“You can go with us. Drinks are always discounted — sometimes even free. Knowing the owner has its perks.”

“I might have to take you up on that. Could use something strong after the day I’ve had.”

Ari looked longingly at the plot of dirt where her house used to stand.

“Did you know one of the victims?”

“That’s where my house used to be.”

“What happened?” Maya asked.

“Rita’s husband burned it down while he was holding her captive.”

“He sounds like a real winner.”

Ariana snorted. “Right. You ready to go?”

“Let’s do this.”

Next door, Lia paced her front lawn talking on the phone.

Hopefully Maya’s story would be enough to convince Charles to return home.
