ChapterThirty-One

“Where are Lia and Rita?” Ariana asked.

“They’re walking around the house,” Charles said.

Ari raced across the field, stopping only for a moment to take in the lit window, and continued on.

Her friends were on the back side of the cabin.

“Find anything?” she asked.

“No,” Rita said. “Everything is locked and—”

Snap!

Lia gasped.

“Turn off your lights.” Ariana switched hers off as she looked in the direction of the noise.

Snap!

Lia clung to her.

“I’m going to check it out,” Ari whispered.

“Me too,” Rita agreed.

“You two are crazy,” Lia said. “We need to wait for the cops. Let them do their jobs.”

“They know what’s going on,” Ariana said, “and they aren’t here. We are.”

“I’m going to call the detective with this new update.”

“They might not be able to do anything. This is a whole different county. Red tape like that slows things down. We’re here and—”

Snap!

Ariana marched toward the noise, holding her knife ready to attack. Mentally preparing herself for a run-in with her deranged neighbor. Ready to make the first move.

She stopped at the corner and peeked around.

The moon was bright but didn’t offer much light. And she didn’t dare turn on her flashlight.

Ariana crept around to the other side of the house.

Someone grabbed her arm.

She swung her blade.

“Ari! It’s me.”

It took her a moment to recognize Damon’s voice. She pulled away from his hold. “What were you thinking, grabbing me like that?”

“Ryan’s here.”

“What?”

“We just saw him walking up the path. We need to get the others.”
