Olivia cleared her throat and blinked a few times. “Well, we can still plan playdates. I bet he would love having the kids over. He’s always talking to them, and they practically think of him as a bonus grandpa.”

“And since they both experienced losses, I’m sure spending time together would be good for all of them.”

“That’ll be perfect.” Olivia smiled, but a single tear ran down her face. “I’m sure going to miss Mrs. Mason.”

“It’s so weird seeing Boone’s things in here,” Rita said, obviously changing the subject. “How long until your house is done?”

“Wait,” Lia said. “Mason … that name sounds familiar.”

Rita glared at her. “We’re trying to move on to another topic.”

“I remember hearing something about them not too long ago.”

“Probably the notice regarding his wife’s death.” Rita turned to Maya. “Was he confused about you being Olivia’s twin?”

“No. He said she’s mentioned me to him.”

Ariana refilled the glasses and held hers high. “To fresh starts.”

Everyone agreed, and tapped their glasses with one another.

“Thank you,” Rita mouthed to her.

“I’ve got it!” Lia snapped her fingers. “I remember what I heard about them, before all this started.”

Rita groaned and apologized to Olivia.

“It’s fine.”

“She’s mourning,” Rita said. “Maybe we can talk about this another time?”

“But this is really interesting.”

“What is?”

“I can’t remember exactly when it was, but not too long ago the Masons were remodeling part of their house — it’s the oldest one in the neighborhood. All the other houses were built around it.”

“What’s your point?” Rita asked.

“I’m getting there. When they were remodeling, they found a box of civil war money in a wall.”

“Was Washington even a state during the civil war?” Ariana asked.

“It was a territory,” Lia said. “And don’t ask me how the money got there, but it was verified as real.” She turned to Maya. “Who knows what you might find in that house?”

“I’m not going to be breaking down any walls.”

“But if people have lived on the property for that long, there might be more treasure waiting to be found.”

Damon and Charles brought in the cooked burgers, and Ariana leaped up to pull out the sides she’d bought from the fridge.

But now she was curious about the Mason house.

Did their neighborhood hold another secret?
