“Do you have proof that our existence harms you?” Byron asked.

“The Elders’ teachings clearly state that—”

“How can you be so sure that their teachings are true?”

“I won’t let you fill my head with nonsense,” she snapped.

She didn’t speak to us anymore after that, didn’t eat any of the food we offered her. She turned inward, looking smaller and less confident with each passing second.

“Margo isn’t scary,” I told her once we were aboard the plane. I made sure to sit next to her, despite the off-putting chill around her.

She glanced at me, seemed about to say something, then sighed, shaking her head.

“She’s just like any other teenager for the most part,” I continued. “Goes to school, hangs out with friends, and she—”

“Don’t lie to me,” she said coldly. “I know what she is.”

She gazed out of the window. I worried for the rest of the journey that I was making a mistake taking Vira to see the daughter she had once abandoned.
