Chapter 36

Dorian

Margo’s eyes turned ice-blue, and a rush of cold air surrounded us.

Chloe shivered. “Margo? Are you… are you okay?”

Margo panted, struggling to breathe. Her eyes were wide with fear.

“What is it?” I asked, feeling a sense of deja vu. I didn’t like it.

“Something’s wrong.” Margo reached for something, touching empty air. I squeezed her hand. So cold.

“What’s happening?” Mrs Harding asked in a frantic voice.

Niall touched Margo’s face. “Is she…?”

Margo gasped then hoarsely said, “Everyone here is in danger. Fire, I think. Find it. Stop it. I can’t. It hurts.”

She slumped back in her seat, looking exhausted. Her mother knelt in front of her, trying to warm up her hands.

“What’s going on?” Emma asked.

“There must be a fire, but maybe it hasn’t started yet,” I said to Niall. “Get Margo out of here. I need to find the fire. Stop it before anyone gets hurt.”

Chloe gripped my arm. “What are you on about?”

I sucked in a deep breath. “When Emma fell into the water, Margo warned me beforehand. That’s how I was able to help. It’s happening again, right now. Margo’s warning us.”

“Is it the arsonist?” she whispered.

“All I know is that somebody is going to get hurt. I have to go. Now.”

I ran, but Niall and the two girls followed me. “I can’t smell smoke yet,” I said. “I don’t know where it will be or if we’ll be in time to prevent it.”

“I’ll look upstairs,” Niall said. “This place is too big. Dorian, you check downstairs. I’ll try to set off a fire alarm.”

“I can do it,” I said.

Niall shook his head. “Let me take responsibility for that. Girls, check this floor then go to Margo and my wife and tell them to leave. Just go!”

I didn’t wait. I ran downstairs. After a moment, Chloe followed. “Dorian, wait!”

“What are you doing?” I called back. “Get out of here!”

“I saw Adam!”

I stopped and turned to her. “So?”

“He’s not supposed to be here. Emma told him not to come. I think he followed her anyway. He was acting weird. He ran away from me. He got into the lift before I could stop him. He had a bag, and he’s… I think he’s the one. The arsonist. He’s obsessed with Emma. He’s not… it’s not that he’s bad. I swear. He’s messed up.”

A couple of pieces of information kicked into place at once. “Did the lift go up or down?”

“Down. I dunno what floor.”

If I stopped by every elevator door, I’d catch his scent. “Get the others and go. I’ll find Adam.”

“No, I’m going with you.” A fire alarm rang out. “Now everyone will leave.”
