Chapter 6

Dorian

I walked home, too frustrated and angry to even wait at a bus stop. I had never felt so unwelcome around Margo before. She obviously hadn’t wanted me around while she was out with her new so-called friends. Why did she have to start in on the pack? What was that about? After everything… I sighed. After everything, she didn’t understand how the pack went about things, and I couldn’t blame her for that.

I was so heated that I could easily blame her for her pointed remarks about soulmates and bossy werewolf boys, but I knew she hadn’t meant it. She cared about Perdita, and too late, I was realising how stressed Margo had felt at the hospital. I’d picked a bad time to bring up Amelia. I had been so worried about the pack’s reactions at the meeting that I’d felt as though I had to deal with everything immediately. That had been a mistake, too.

Something else bugged me. Emma. I was getting used to the way she acted, but there was something different about her, something off. I didn’t understand what I was sensing, but the sadness in her eyes was enough to concern me.

Was that the problem? Was Margo annoyed that Emma pretended to like me? Or was I simply getting in the way? Margo had mentioned wanting to feel normal. Maybe the pack was too much for her to deal with. But the pack was part of me, so where did that leave us?

I was halfway home when someone stepped out in front of me. I braced myself, on-edge and ready for an attack, until I realised it was Victor and relaxed. Which was odd, because he used to be the reason I was ready for an attack at all times.

“What are you doing here?” I blurted without thinking.

He shoved his hands deep into his pockets. “Walking.” He narrowed his gaze then. “What’s with you?”

“Nothing.” I walked around him. He turned and joined me, keeping up with ease even though I strode faster on purpose to lose him.

“Need a run?” he asked after a moment.

I shook my head.

“Worried about the pack meeting?” He looked away. “I meant what I said before. You were always right about Margo. If we had listened sooner, maybe things wouldn’t have gotten so bad.”

“Things had already started getting bad before Margo ever showed up,” I reminded him. “We were all blindsided by Dom.”

We kept walking. He sniffed the air in a way that made me want to slap him. “You seem on edge.”

I made an effort to calm down.

“Margo went to the hospital to see Adam with the other townies,” I told him, feeling as though I owed him something. “I went there after the meeting, thinking we could hang out or something, and she got mad at me.”

“Well, what did you say to her?”

I bit back a groan. “I told her I didn’t think she should hang about with Amelia for a while, you know, to get the pack’s attention away from her. You heard them today. They have their eyes on Margo because she’s spending time with Amelia.”

“She smells like death whenever she hangs out with Amelia. She has to learn to fall in.”

I glanced at him. “Fall in? That’s what she was mad about, thinking I expected her to do that.”

“Look at the people you live with,” he said. “Perdita did it.”

After Margo’s accusations, Victor’s words sent a shiver of anger up and down my spine. Perdita didn’t fall in line. She never had, and Nathan would never expect her to, except…

She was living with the pack and following pack rules, but that had only put her at risk. She hadn’t seemed happy lately. I didn’t want that for Margo. Whenever I tried to see the situation through her eyes, unsettling doubts rose from the pit of my stomach.

“If Margo can’t handle the pack now, what will it be like if you wind up living together?”

I felt sick. Nothing was going the way I needed it to go. The anger I felt towards Margo melted away at the enormity of what a relationship with me meant for her. The sacrifices that would be necessary.

“Was the hot one there, by the way?” Victor asked.

“Hot one?” The question was so out of the blue that it took my brain more than a minute to catch up.

“The brunette,” he continued. “The short, bossy one.”

“Wait, Chloe?” I shook my head at him in astonishment. “You don’t even know their names?”
