“You were pretty sneaky last night,” Nathan said. “Slipping away, thinking you were smooth.”

“Oh, come on,” I said. “I stayed until almost midnight. I wanted to spend at least a few minutes alone with my girlfriend.”

“You love calling her that,” he mocked before turning serious. “Be careful, all right? She’s had a different upbringing than you, and you don’t want to get on her parents’ bad side.”

“I didn’t do anything,” I protested. “Why do you always make it seem like I’ll be the one doing wrong anyway?”

Nathan laughed to himself. “Because I was a teenager once? I just don’t want you to get banned from seeing your girlfriend. So be good.”

I made a face.

“I’m serious,” he said. “Remember she’s not a wolf. It’s different for her. Take things slowly, carefully, and you’ll have nothing to worry about.”

After a moment, I frowned. “Wait, what did you do when you were a teenager?”

“Just play the damn game.”

I grinned to myself, beating him easily. It was way too easy to wind him up.
