She shook her head. “Not yet. Let him enjoy his day. I don’t want to ruin it for him.” Tears dropped down her cheeks for the rest of the journey. We all sat in silence, holding down our emotions as best we could.

At the hospital, Perdita was taken in straight away, Nathan by her side. The rest of us waited impatiently for news.

“It’s getting late,” Byron said. “Ryan, go on home. Don’t tell anyone, and make sure the fireworks go ahead.”

Ryan hesitated. “Let me know how she is. I… She’ll be fine. She’s strong.” The tremor in his voice sent me spiralling into fresh new worry.

“Will she be okay?” I asked the alpha, seeking reassurance because my hands refused to stop shaking. I had completely forgotten about Margo, and I hoped Amelia had taken her home.

“Of course,” Byron said with confidence, to my relief.

“What about the baby?”

“Things like this can happen without harming the baby.” He squeezed my shoulder. “As long as Perdita is okay, we’ll get through this, no matter what.”

But I didn’t know if Perdita could cope with a loss. She’d been different after the first time, and it was obvious she blamed herself. I didn’t know how any of us would cope if anything happened to Perdita either. With clenched fists, I sat in silence and waited for news.
