“Oh, enough,” Amelia said. “Just take her home and stop nagging me. I’m too tired for this right now.”

“She’s too cold. I’ll heat the car first. I’ll be back,” he warned. “Do nothing.”

She rolled her eyes at his departure. When she looked at me, she shivered.

“I heard a voice,” I said. “I did, didn’t I?”

“My spirit guide.” She stared at her hands. “Getting in my way again. I don’t know what she is, only that she gives me enigmatic advice that I never understand until it’s too late.”

“It sounded pretty direct to me.”

She met my gaze. “We did the right thing. Doing nothing is always worse.”

Ryan came back, apparently deciding he couldn’t trust us to be left alone. He led me outside to the car. Victor approached, froze, and then awkwardly turned away and left without saying a word.

I caught sight of my reflection in the car and couldn’t even get mad. I scared myself. Back home, my parents barely spoke to Ryan, just bundled me inside to fuss over me. I tried to explain, but it didn’t even matter anymore. Nobody agreed on anything when it came to me, not even my parents. I got to hear them argue over what happened, too.

I still had to face Dorian. I wasn’t looking forward to that.
