He tossed his head then left the room. When he returned, he was human and fully clothed.

“I was going to say,” he began sarcastically, “that the pills you used to take are our only option now. It’s worth a try, right?”

“People keep mentioning these pills,” Perdita said. “What do they do?”

“I used to take them to stop my sleepwalking,” I said. “It sort of suppressed the weirdness.”

“I’ll talk to my dad and your parents about it. It might help him understand you better,” she said.

After she left the room, Dorian sat next to me and pulled me closer to him. “You’re still so cold. Is it any better?”

“It’s better when you’re here,” I said. “It’s going to take a while for me to thaw out again.”

“It’s never been this bad before. We have to stop this from happening again.”

I hated those pills. “What if I take the pills and something bad happens to somebody?”

“What if you don’t, and something bad happens to you? What if you die?”

“Dorian,” Nathan said from the doorway. “You should shift back. It’ll keep her warmer. I’ll sit with her while you’re gone. But grab a quick bite to eat first. You need to keep your strength up, too.”

Dorian looked at me. I smiled as best I could. “He’s right. You should eat.”

Dorian left, somewhat reluctantly. Nathan sat next to me on the sofa.

“You’re going to be okay this time, but Dorian’s right. You should stop trying so hard to push yourself. Helping people means nothing if it kills you. You won’t help anyone then, and what will your parents do without you?”

“I’m scared,” I said. “I’m scared that somebody I care about will get hurt if I don’t keep trying.”

“Then you should understand that the people who care about you are terrified to watch what’s happening to you. This is no way to live.”

“I didn’t mean to do it this time,” I said, subdued by his words. They wormed their way into my mind and refused to leave. “It was completely unexpected. Maybe this is just who I am.”

“We all need to know who we are. If we can find a way for you to safely do this, we’ll take it. All we’re asking is for you to take a break. You can’t help anyone in this condition.”

He was right. I needed to get better to use my gift. I needed to be strong enough to control my gift. I needed to know more to survive my gift.
