She glanced at Nathan who nodded. Sighing, she reached for my hand. “Of course I’ll support you.”

Feeling more determined, I looked at the alpha. “I’m doing this.”

“We’ll have to discuss it with Margo and her parents,” Byron said. “They have a right to be part of this discussion. Others might have ideas, too.”

“The Hardings will be able to direct us to the place of Margo’s birth, or at least, where they found her,” Nathan said. “After that, it’s a shot in the dark, but there’s a chance there are answers out there.”

I breathed a sigh of relief. They wouldn’t try to stop me.

Byron organised a small meeting between us and the Hardings. Ryan was invited because he knew Europe well, Amelia invited herself, and Perdita wanted to be involved in anything regarding me, so our living room was full when the discussion began.

I had explained my idea to the group, but the silence that followed was unsettling. “If I can find them,” I continued, “then we might be able to learn from the source what Margo can do, and how she can do it without harming herself.”

“I understand all of that,” Mrs Harding said, “and I’m grateful you’re coming up with ideas, but finding them will be the problem. We picked Margo up from an orphanage in the middle of nowhere, and she had already been there for a long time. Who knows if they kept records of her arrival or if anyone there still remembers her. This place wasn’t exactly first-world when we were there.”

Mr Harding rubbed his hands over his face. “All we know for sure is that she was abandoned, and the people there were afraid to take care of her properly. I mean, if they work there still, they’ll remember her. She stood out, even then.”

“We reached out to the orphanage before while trying to track down medical records,” Mrs Harding added. “They never responded, so who knows if it’s even still running.” She glanced at Margo. “Finding your real family is a big deal. Are you sure you’re ready for this?”

“You’re my real family.” Margo took her mother’s hand in hers. “That’s not what this is about.”

“We want Margo to get better,” I said. “Not reunite them.” I looked at Margo. “Unless you want that.”

She hesitated before shaking her head, but I had caught the fleeting longing in her eyes. I understood her need to know her past. I hoped it didn’t turn out to be something painful, something she’d regret learning.

“All right then,” Mr Harding said. “This is doable. I’ll go with you.”

“But I have to work,” Mrs Harding said. “What about Margo?”

“She can still stay here with me, even if only during the day,” Perdita said. “I’m supposed to be resting anyway, so I can keep an eye on her.”

“I’ll keep an eye on her, too,” Nathan said. “It won’t be a problem.”

Perdita shot him a sharp look. “What are you talking about? You’re leaving with Dorian.”

“No.” Nathan’s shoulders stiffened. “I’m staying with you.”

“What about Dorian?”

He shot me a glance. I nodded with understanding. I did get it, but for a brief moment, I was disappointed. I hoped I hid it well.

“I can’t leave you right now, Perdita.” He held out his hands as though pleading. “You have to see that.”

“Dorian needs you more than I do. This is important.”

“You’re important. The baby is important. Perdita, if something happens to you, and I’m not here, again, then I—”

“I’ll take your place,” Byron said. “If you stay with Perdita, I’ll go with Dorian.”

Nathan looked ready to choke up.

“Byron,” Perdita said, her voice strained. “The pack needs you. I’ll be fine. Nathan can watch over Dorian, and I can call my dad if I have any problems.”

Byron reached out to pat her shoulder. “I think I need to meet these harbingers personally, so Nathan should stay here to take over the pack. Please understand.”

She squeezed her eyes shut for a moment before finally fixing a resigned gaze on the alpha. “You better take care of Dorian then. I mean it. I’m holding you responsible if anything happens to him.”

“What could happen to Dorian?” Margo asked anxiously.
