I looked over at Emma. She was flirting with an older boy. “You couldn’t possibly think she did this.”

“I don’t know anything for sure. Can’t you figure it out?”

“I sleepwalk,” I hissed. “I’m not psychic.” When Dorian was there, I rarely lost myself completely. Did I really change something at Perdita’s house after she fainted?

Victor sniffed at his sleeve, wrinkling his nose in disgust. “I don’t know how Dorian deals with this. I’m never getting the smell out of my clothes.”

“Yeah, because that’s the most important issue right now!”

“You’re right. We need to get out of here.” He glanced around. “People will think you’re doing this if you keep showing up whenever a fire starts.”

“But it wasn’t me, right?”

He stared at me, his eyebrows raised. “What’s the point if you can’t even remember what you’ve done? How does that help anyone?”

I had no idea. “I need to get home. I’m tired.”

“I’ll bring your bag to school tomorrow,” he said. “Get some sleep. You look like you’re dead on your feet.” He stopped short as though suddenly aware of what he said. “Sorry.”

I sighed then turned to leave, immediately exhausted.

“Nobody was home,” he called after me. “Is that why you’re still standing?”

I looked back at him in surprise.

He caught up to me. “You didn’t have to save anyone, so you’re on your feet. That’s the connection.”

“Then why did I even show up?” I said. “How did I know to come here?” I tried to smile. “Maybe I’m getting better at this.”

“I thought you were supposed to be taking pills that stopped this from happening?”

“I must have missed one by accident. Or I was late taking it. Stop looking at me so suspiciously! Do you think I enjoy waking up somewhere strange, not knowing what happened?”

“I have no idea, but you told Dorian you were going to take your pills, so do it.”

“I did!”

I could tell he didn’t believe me. I wasn’t sure I blamed him. Back home, I took another pill. Maybe they were only half-working until there was more of a build-up in my system. Or maybe I was different now, unable to control what was happening to me, even with the pills. Yet another thing I didn’t know for sure.
