The door to the hall was still closed, and I spotted Niall amid the strangers, shoving one of them away from it. Jumping down, I made my way over. Somebody tried to hold me back, but I shoved them off me. When I reached Niall, he was pinning a harbinger against the wall.

“They blocked the door,” he shouted.

A shiver ran down my back as a chill rose in the room. The room was silenced as though the air had been sucked right out of it. I didn’t know what people thought was happening, but it was getting harder even for me to breathe. I struggled to reach the door, but one of the harbingers gripped my throat. Instantly, my body felt encased in ice. My lungs constricted and blood trickled from my nose.

I shouldered the harbinger, falling with him as we both lost our balance. A second harbinger gripped my hair and lifted me to my feet. Niall shoved him off me, blood flowing freely from his nose, too, but two harbingers pulled him back and shoved him to the ground.

Another cool hand on my shoulder made me flinch, but all of a sudden, it was easier to breathe. Vira. Her presence alerted the nearby harbingers, giving Niall a chance to recover.

The harbingers aimed death at us, but Vira protected me, and the worst of the feeling drifted away.

“I think Margo’s trapped inside,” I called out to her.

“Get to her,” she said hoarsely. “I’ll buy you time.”

We moved together, her keeping the harbingers at bay until we reached the door. It had been blocked with a large iron bar. I ran my sleeve across my nose then unbarred the door.

Vira fell against me, and I whirled around to support her. A harbinger had his hand around her throat, but he wasn’t alone, and Vira was weakening. I gripped his wrist and twisted, hearing a nasty crack. The harbinger cried out, cold air blasting out from him. It felt like walking through a snowstorm.

Niall made his way to us. “Find Margo,” he bellowed as the harbingers converged on us. Niall and Vira shielded me with their bodies.

“I can’t leave you two alone,” I shouted back.

“Go,” Vira urged. “Get to her before Eli does.”

Then a rush of wind blew around us, warm and familiar. Amelia appeared as if from nowhere, her eyes silver and an aura of power emanating from her.

“Get away from them,” she commanded in a dark voice that didn’t sound like her. The wind rushed around her like a tornado. The closest harbingers backed up away from her. Ryan shoved his way in front of Vira and Niall, ready to defend them, and I sagged in relief. Help had arrived.

I left them to deal with the harbingers and the mayhem of the crowd and focused on getting through the door. I burst into the performance hall. It was almost empty. I ran to the front of the stage where Victor was kneeling, struggling to breathe. Alison was trying to help him up.

“He’s here,” she cried out in a panicked voice. “He attacked Victor.”

Victor spat out blood. “Margo followed him backstage. Tammie went after her. I’m sorry, Dor. I couldn’t get up.”

“Pack arrived,” I said. “Stay here. Stay safe. I’ll find Margo.”

I was about to run when an intense chill came from behind my back. Like fingers, it crept across my skin, a dark presence that instantly reminded me of the scary force that came after us on the mountains. I forgot all about running.

CHAPTER35

Margo

“What?”Eli said scornfully. “Do you think you can hurt me because you turn into a dog?” He kicked out at me.

I grabbed his leg with both hands and shoved him back. I got to my feet and glared at him. “I think you’re an idiot for letting yourself get trapped in here with me.”

He laughed. “By the time you shift, your heart will have already stopped beating.”

“Maybe so.” I stepped closer to him. “But I had no intentions of shifting.”

He shot out a dart of death. Quick, painful, but ultimately non-fatal. I barely needed to put up a shield.

“Why did you come back here?” I demanded. “Vira willnevergo with you.”

“She won’t have a choice.” His face was like thunder as he gathered power from the spirits attached to him. “Not when I’m done with this place.”

“You’ll never beat the werewolves. You can’t even beat your Elders.”
