“What were you doing back here?”

I shrugged. “A man died.”

“Oh.” She clutched my arm a little tighter. “Did you… you know?”

“It wasn’t like that.”

Her hands flew to her mouth with joy. “That means you’re getting better. Let’s go eat to celebrate.”

She sounded so enthusiastic that I didn’t have the heart to explain what had happened. We headed to the lift, and as we turned to watch the doors close, I thought I saw a shock of white hair hurry straight past. The sight made me flinch, sending goosebumps to the surface of my skin.

It could have been a patient or a visitor. With death so close to mind, it was easy to fear that more harbingers were running around. I hoped I was being paranoid.

CHAPTER6

Dorian

Margoand I planned on grabbing a bite to eat before self-defence class began. I headed over to the community centre to meet her after her latest rehearsal. She hadn’t attended Nathan’s class for a while, but now her cast was off. It was important to me that she learned more about protecting herself, but I wished I could give her a normal life.

She was waiting outside the community centre, giggling with Emma and Chloe. I liked that they had taken her under their wings. School had been a lot less antagonistic lately.

Margo noticed me then ran ahead of the others to show off her bare arm.

“I kind of miss the cast,” I said, grinning at her excitement. “I got used to it.”

“Something weird happened at the hospital." We strolled back towards the others. “I felt death, saw an old man die, actually, but it wasn’t bad or anything. I was in control, and I didn’t feel compelled to do anything. I was present, witnessing it, and that was it.”

“Are you okay?”

“Yeah, it made me feel like I'm doing the right thing when I try to stop bad things from happening, you know?”

I squeezed her hand. “Well, let’s start by making sure bad things don’t happen to you.”

We reached the other girls. “Want to grab a burger with us?” Margo asked.

Chloe glanced at me. “As long as we’re not getting in the way.”

“The more the merrier,” I said. “I should have brought Victor with me. Remind me to bring him something home or he’ll get pissy and think I’m mad at him or something.” I gave Margo a meaningful look. “Not that I don’t have a right to be mad.”

Margo stared back at me without blinking.

Smirking, I raised both eyebrows.

“Did he…” Her voice fell away.

“Yup.”

“What’s going on?” Emma demanded.

“Not a lot.” I grinned at Margo’s horrified expression. “Just Victor being an idiot as always.” I kissed Margo on the forehead then wrapped my hand around hers. “Come on. I’m starving.”

Margo held back, letting the others go ahead. “Dorian, about Victor…”

“I know,” I said. “He was upset.”

“He didn’t mean to,” she whispered hurriedly. “He didn’t do anything else.”

“You should have told me though.”
